Description:
The primary focus of this field inspector trainee position is to provide oversight of contractor's work efforts by ensuring quality control and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction/maintenance projects of routine to moderate complexity, under the direction of a Transportation Construction Inspector Supervisor (TCIS), Construction Manager or designee. Candidate will also be responsible for project documentation and oversight through verification and record keeping.
Requirements:
Duties/Responsibilities:

Detailed responsibilities include but are not limited to the performance of duties in the following areas:

• Maintenance of detailed inspection records.

• Maintain project records including daily Project Site Activity (PSA) reports, materials notebooks, as-built plans, pay quantity records, and monthly estimates.

• Review and monitor Equal Employment Opportunity/Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) documentation and compliance with Federal labor requirements/regulations for Federal-aid construction projects, ensuring contractor compliance with program requirements.

• Perform and document required materials testing.

• Inspect and monitor contractual field work including excavation, drainage facilities, roadway surfaces, and structures.

• Report contractor's daily operations.

• Take field measurements of pay items.

• Review placement of and witness tests associated with the quality control of construction materials.

• Review line, grade, dimension, and elevation parameters.

• Oversee and enforce the installation of appropriate erosion and sediment controls.

• Oversee and enforce the installation of highway work zones and traffic control devices.

Required Skills/Abilities:

The successful Transportation Assistant (Field Inspector Trainee) candidate is expected to be proficient in and possess knowledge and experience with basic computer/iPad fundamentals of operation. Familiarity with the following software programs is preferred:

• Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Adobe.

• Able to communicate with the client, contractor personnel and the general public in a professional and courteous manner.

• Application of mathematical formulas including algebra, geometry, and basic trigonometry.

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job is performed in an office environment and or transportation construction job sites. This role routinely uses field and standard office equipment such as computers, tablets, phones, photocopiers, digital cameras, filing cabinets, nuclear gauges, surveying tools, and other field-testing equipment materials.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb, drive; use hands; and reach with hands and arms.

Travel

Most assignments do not require more than an hour of travel to and from job sites. However, some assignments will require extensive regional travel each day and others could require staying out of town overnight if distance to job site is greater than 90 miles from home.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday. Weekends and flexible hours are possible.
